From Collection to Recycling: What Happens to Your Batteries After Pickup?

Vesco Clean Energy Battery Management

When your team hands off used batteries to a service provider, it may feel like the job is complete. But in reality, that handoff marks the start of a detailed process that involves strict safety standards, regulatory checkpoints, and complete material traceability.

At Vesco Clean Energy, we give businesses a clear view of what happens after pickup. Whether you need documentation for compliance or assurance for your ESG program, here’s how we manage your batteries from start to finish.

Step 1: On-Site Collection and Inspection

After your collection is scheduled, our trained staff arrives with the correct containers and packaging for the battery chemistries involved. If your team has already sorted and labeled the materials, we verify that everything meets DOT and EPA standards. If not, we can assist with sorting and on-site safe packaging.

Damaged, defective, or recalled batteries are handled using special permit containers that meet DOT/PHMSA requirements. Every pickup is logged, weighed, and tracked before leaving your facility.

Step 2: Transportation to a Vesco Facility

Batteries are transported by certified carriers familiar with handling hazardous materials. Containers are clearly labeled, and all movement complies with DOT regulations. Materials are delivered to one of our processing locations in Michigan and checked into our internal tracking system.

Step 3: Sorting by Chemistry and Condition

This step is where safety and value intersect. Our team sorts each battery by chemistry and physical condition using trained visual inspection and grading protocols. This prevents contamination, fire hazards, and misrouted materials.

We manage all battery types, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and DDR units. Sorted batteries are staged for either interim storage or direct shipment to the appropriate downstream processor.

Step 4: Repackaging and Shipment to Recyclers

Once sorted, batteries are packaged into UN-rated, DOT-compliant containers based on their type and condition. From there, we coordinate transportation to approved recycling partners. These processors use mechanical, thermal, or chemical methods to recover valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, or to neutralize hazardous components safely.

All of our downstream partners are vetted for environmental performance and regulatory compliance.

Step 5: Documentation and Reporting

Once processing is complete, we provide detailed documentation for your records. You receive shipping manifests, weight summaries, processor receipts, and final disposition reports. This supports your internal compliance program, ESG disclosures, and hazardous waste reporting obligations.

Why It Matters

If you do not have visibility into where your batteries go or how they are handled, your business carries both compliance risk and reputational uncertainty. With growing demands for sustainability transparency, that kind of ambiguity is no longer acceptable.

At Vesco Clean Energy, we manage every step of the battery recycling process with precision and accountability. From collection to recycling, we help you close the loop safely and confidently.
